Khunkhar Mataji has been worshipped since Samvat 1139 (12th century), when her first temple was built in Toshina, Nagaur (Rajasthan). She is revered as the Kuldevi of many Maheshwari clans — including Totla, Toshniwal, Kothari, Naaglaa, Patwari, Bharka, Nagori, Mijaji, Munji, Modi, Dama, Newar, Lambu, Damdi, Singhi, Das, Dagga, Jhalariya, Jainariya, and Bhakrod.
