The Divine Call
In the late 20th century, the ancient temple of Khunkhar Mataji at Toshina lay forgotten. Only faint traces of its existence survived in Maheshwari family records and oral traditions. It was at this time that Mataji chose her devotees to restore her glory.
The Quest
Guided by faith, Prabhadevi shared her experiences with her husband, Shri Bhagwandasji Totla. Together, they sought answers. Their search led them to genealogical record-keepers (जागा जी) who confirmed that a great temple of Khunkhar Mata had once stood in Toshina nearly 850 years ago, built in Samvat 1139 by Seth Tosa-Shah, ancestor of the Toshniwal clan. Encouraged by this revelation, the Totla family resolved to find the temple’s lost site.
Excavation and Signs of Grace
In 1988, Prabhadevi first visited Toshina and recognized the exact spot she had seen in her dreams. With the cooperation of villagers, an excavation was carried out between 1992–1996. Ancient stone pillars, carved slabs, statues, and a havan-kund were unearthed — clear proof of a grand temple once standing there.
During a night-long jagran, a miraculous sign occurred. A black serpent appeared at the site, and when Prabhadevi offered it milk, devotees took it as Mataji’s blessing and confirmation that the revival must begin.
The New Temple
With devotion and support, construction of a new shrine started. On 25th January 1998, the new idol of Khunkhar Mataji was consecrated — seated on a lotus, with four hands holding swords, symbolizing strength and protection. This date is now celebrated every year as the Temple Pratishtha Day with great fervor.
Their Legacy
The efforts of Shri Bhagwandasji Totla and Smt. Prabhadevi Totla gave new life to centuries-old faith. Through their vision, perseverance, and surrender to Maa’s will, Khunkhar Mataji once again became the living heart of Toshina.
